Discovery only; nothing adopted. tools/clusters.js: the features (build/clusterfeat.json), the groups and checks (build/clusters.json), the tables below (--report). Snapshot 8dcd24032d (inputs hash dcd477d8a78c), Track A (step 34b, wCarry 0), the same 733 units of 16 armies as T-716's job profiles. No change to ledger.js, exam.js, the ledger data or the cascade tools. List co-occurrence from grimstat-corpus (https://github.com/N041M/grimstat-corpus, CC BY 4.0), the lists their players and organisers published on MiniHeadQuarters; counts only, 11th-edition lists from 20 June 2026.
In plain English
What we built. T-716's job profiles say what a unit does (20 jobs, each against its own army). This pass adds how it does it: how much of its damage is in melee, how far its best gun reaches, indirect fire, Move and Fly, its body (Infantry, Mounted, Beast, Monster, Vehicle, Walker, Aircraft, Character, Swarm, Fortification), its points per model and per unit, a rough board position (home, midboard, forward) and its durability per point measured across all armies as well as within its own. Then all 733 units of the 16 armies were grouped together, so a group means the same thing in every army.
The groups. Sixteen groups, each readable in a line (the table below has each group's numbers and examples):
- Gun vehicles (75): tanks and gun walkers at 24"+ that sit back (Predators, Hydras, the Forgefiend, the Basilisk).
- Fortifications and drop-ins (7): no Move (Drop Pods, the Aegis line, the Sporocyst).
- Back-line support characters (34): psykers and buffers that shoot or cast rather than fight (Librarians, Primaris Psykers, the Weirdboy).
- Fighting squad leaders (61): cheap melee characters that lead a squad and hunt characters (Captains, Judiciars, the Kâhl, the Tyranid Prime).
- Fast melee squads (48): melee at Move 10+ (jump packs, cavalry, Seekers; Genestealers, the Leapers, melee Warriors).
- Melee monsters and walkers (78): the big melee bodies (Hive Tyrants, the Haruspex, Carnifexes, Bloodthirsters, melee Dreadnoughts, the Maulerfiend and the Mutalith).
- Cheap support pieces (58): banners, priests, officers and a few cheap trinkets.
- Shooting line infantry (43): infantry that shoots at 18–24" and holds the line (Intercessors, Termagants, Barbgaunts, the ranged Warriors, Hearthkyn, shooting Steeljacks).
- Durable melee infantry (66): tough melee infantry at Move 6 (Bladeguard, Meganobz, melee Steeljacks, Tzaangors).
- Forward-deploying infantry (33): Scouts and Infiltrators (Kasrkin, Recon Squads, Eliminators).
- Aircraft and fast flyers (39): Fly at Move 14+ (every Aircraft, speeders, the Harpy).
- Super-heavies (42): the 300-point-plus tanks, Land Raiders and their kin.
- Transports (39): Rhinos, Tauroxes, the Sagitaur.
- Flying shooting infantry (16): Inceptors, Gargoyles, Scourges, the greatbow Enlightened.
- Heavy weapon teams and artillery crews (39): slow infantry with long guns (Devastators, Thunderkyn, Tankbustas).
- Deep-striking melee heroes (55): melee characters that arrive or move far (Belial, Lady Malys, the Einhyr Champion, the Deathleaper).
Jordan's types. Two of the four he named emerge cleanly: shooting infantry (Barbgaunts, Termagants, the ranged Warriors and the shooting Steeljacks, all four in one group; random units of the same armies never manage it) and very quick melee (Genestealers, the Leapers and the melee Warriors, all three in Fast melee squads, with the jump packs and cavalry of other armies; 3% by chance; Necron Wraiths can't be checked, Necrons aren't among our 16 armies). The other two don't: durable midboard shooting splits (the Maleceptor and the Ballistus with the gun tanks, the Redemptor with the super-heavies, the plain Dreadnought with the melee walkers), and durable midboard melee splits by body (the Haruspex with the melee monsters, the melee Steeljacks with the durable melee infantry). Our features see a gun's range and a body type, not "a tough thing that fights from the middle of the board".
Jordan's rival pairs. 5 of his 13 share a group (chance 1.1), 10 of 13 counting a unit's second-nearest group. T-716's archetypes put 9 together, but with chance at 2.3: seven big archetypes put more pairs together by being big. The pairs these groups split are split for a real reason: the ranged and melee Warriors (Jordan's own types put them apart), the Grimnyr and Iron-master against the Kâhl (shooting and support characters against a melee one), the Forgefiend and the Predator against the Mutalith (guns against a melee beast), the two kinds of Enlightened (melee against bows).
Are they rivals in players' lists? No: the opposite. Among popular units, two of the same group are taken together a little more often than independence expects (mean lift +0.01; different groups −0.05; 97% of random relabellings sit lower). Lists take several units of one kind about as often as chance, or a little more. Substitutes exist (the Swarmlord and the Hive Tyrant share 1 list where 3.6 are expected; Company Heroes and Terminators 0 where 3), but they are pairs inside a group, not the group. The groups are kinds of unit, not slots.
Ranking within groups. On the reviewers' consensus pairs (the four armies with two or more lists), Track A orders 70.1% of all pairs right; within a group 67.6% (219 pairs), across groups 70.3%; random groupings of the same sizes give 72.4% within (95% range 66.7–78.2). Ranking a unit by its place within its own group (best of its kind, worst of its kind) gets 57.0% of the army's pairs, well below Value's 70.1%. Over all 16 armies, Value's rank correlation with the reviewers' letters is 0.18 inside the groups and 0.27 across each whole army. So the within-group order is not better than the whole-army order, and "best of its kind" is a worse ranking than Value. Like units are also close in Value, so their pairs are harder; that alone could explain the small gap, but there is no sign that comparing like with like helps.
Against T-716's archetypes. The how-features split the three big archetypes by method: the "deep-striking hammer" (176) becomes melee monsters, durable melee infantry, deep-striking heroes and fast melee squads; the "long-range heavy" (180) becomes gun vehicles, super-heavies, aircraft and heavy weapon teams; "line troops" (137) becomes shooting line, durable melee, forward-deploying and fast melee infantry. The small archetypes survive (transports 24 of 33, cheap support 43 of 69, squad leaders 46 of 88). The infiltrating skirmisher scatters (it was a job, not a method). Adjusted Rand 0.26.
My view. Good enough for honest public role labels: they read the same in every army, all but one group (the seven fortifications) holds units of 9 to 16 armies, and they hold their shape when the data is resampled (0.41 to 0.86). Not good enough, on their own, to rank units against their real rivals: the checks say same-group units are complements in lists, the within-group order is no better than the whole-army one, and the biggest groups are too broad inside one army (14 Tyranid units are "melee monsters", from the Swarmlord to the Carnifexes). Rivals need a second step inside a group: the units players swap (taken instead of each other in lists), at a similar price, with the same delivery.
Choices made alone
- Melee share from the weapons, not the ledger. The ledger values one mode per form, so its split is 0 or 1 and puts the ranged Warriors in pure melee; 44 units differ by more than half between the two. The weapon share (expected damage per 100 points into a marine-like and a vehicle-like target, diagnose's columns) is continuous. The ledger's is kept beside in build/clusters.json (
ledgerMelee). - Engagement band from the best ranged weapon (diagnose's bestR_range), melee when the melee share is 0.6 or more or there is no gun.
- Board position by rule (tools/clusters.js header), half weight because it is built from the other features.
- Weights, set before any check: what 2, attack 1.5, body 1.5, mobility 1, cost 1, durability 1, position 0.5; each family's weight spread over its features (√(W ÷ count)), so the 19 jobs don't outvote the rest by number; a 1/0 flag counts two SDs, so a rare body (Aircraft) can still make a group. Changing the jobs' weight to 4 or 1 keeps 62–64% of the grouping (adjusted Rand); with the jobs at 4 Jordan's two types that emerge come apart (2 of 3, 2 of 4), at 1 they half hold (2 of 3, 3 of 4). The how-features are what find them.
- k = 16. The silhouette is flat (0.16 to 0.18 from 8 to 16: there are no sharp groups in this data, only denser regions) and the mixture's BIC falls all the way to 16, so neither picks k. 16 was kept for reading: at 12 the shooting line and the forward infantry are one group, and the fast and durable melee infantry one; at 16 every group is one sentence. The checks at every k are in the first table; Jordan's pairs are 5 or 6 of 13 at any k, so k wasn't picked on them. The three quick melee units share a group at every k, but up to 14 it is the group of all melee infantry; at 16 it is the fast one.
- The harassment marker was first Move 10"+, which marked every Predator (11th-edition tanks move 10"); tightened to Move 12"+ and 150 points or less. A marker for check (c), not a feature.
- Names are mine, read from each group's centre and members, with an anchor unit so a rerun that reshuffles the groups falls back to an automatic description.
What's still missing
- Durable midboard shooting needs a measure of firepower at 12–24" against durability, not the best gun's range; the Maleceptor and the Redemptor have 36" or 18" guns but are valued for standing in the middle and trading.
- The big groups are too broad inside an army (melee monsters, fighting squad leaders, deep-striking heroes): a second level of grouping within each, or a price band, would split the Swarmlord from the Carnifexes.
- Slots, not kinds: the rival finder should add list behaviour (pairs of a group taken instead of each other) to likeness; the corpus is thin for most armies (fewer than 20 lists in 11 of 16).
- Characters are grouped by their own fighting and cost, not by what they lend (T-715); the support groups mix leaders of very different worth.
- Necrons aren't in the 16 armies, so the Wraiths can't be checked.
- The ledger's mode choice: the ranged Tyranid Warriors are valued as a melee unit (no ranged Kill at all); worth a look from whoever owns the ledger.
