About Tactical Reroll
A free, fan-made mathhammer toolkit for Warhammer 40,000: a dice calculator, an army-vs-army comparator for imported lists, and points-efficiency rankings for every unit.
How the scores work
- Basis. Each unit is scored at its minimum size and that size's points, with its default wargear.
- Offense is the expected number of wounds removed per 100 points against five targets: Chaff (10 × T3 Sv5+ W1 infantry); MEQ (5 × T4 Sv3+ W2 infantry); TEQ (5 × T5 Sv2+ 4++ W3 infantry); Light vehicle (T10 Sv3+ W12 vehicle); Heavy vehicle (T12 Sv2+ W16 vehicle). Every gun fires; in melee each model uses its best weapon for that target plus any Extra Attacks weapons. No cover, Heavy weapons stationary, not within half range. Excess damage on a model is lost, as in the game.
- Defense is the number of hits needed to destroy the whole unit, per 100 points, from five attackers: Small arms (S4 AP0 D1 (bolter, lasgun)); Special (S5 AP-1 D1 (heavy bolter-class)); Plasma (S8 AP-2 D2 (plasma, power fist)); Elite (S6 AP-2 D3 (elite melee, precision)); Anti-tank (S12 AP-3 D6 (lascannon, melta)). It uses toughness, save, invulnerable save, wounds and the unit's own Feel No Pain (one it always has; not one a leader or enhancement gives).
- Utility is what damage and durability miss: board control (Objective Control per 100 pts); action economy (Units per 100 pts: cheap bodies for actions); reach (Move, plus Fly, Deep Strike, Infiltrators, Scouts); support (Leader, auras, Transport, Lone Operative, Stealth, revives). It comes from the datasheet's numbers, keywords and ability names only, so it can't weigh what a Leader's or aura's rule actually does. Treat it as a rough guide.
- Scores are percentiles against every current (non-Legends) unit: 100 means best per point. Offense, Defense and Utility each average their parts' percentiles; Value is the mean of Offense and Defense. In the app's rankings you can blend in Utility with your own weights.
- Not included: what abilities, auras, detachment rules and stratagems actually do, Feel No Pain from leaders or enhancements, and rules that bring models back. Those change real games a lot, so treat the scores as a starting point. In the comparator you can switch such effects on as buffs.
The expected values use the same engine as the comparator, checked against a 200,000-roll dice simulation.
Data & intellectual property
This site doesn't host datasheets. When you pick a faction, the calculator loads its data in your browser straight from the community-maintained BSData project on GitHub, the same data list builders use. The site itself publishes only unit names and points (to identify units) and its own analysis: the scores, rankings and matchup numbers. Recent winning lists come from grimstat-corpus (CC BY 4.0): lists their players and organisers published on MiniHeadQuarters, with player names removed and a link to each event. We don't publish Games Workshop's datasheets or rules text: see the official codexes and the Warhammer 40,000 app for those.
