Job profiles, rivals by dominance, archetypes from the numbers (T-716, 5 Oct)

From reports/tiers/2026-10-05-jobprofiles.md , rendered when the site is built.

Discovery only; nothing adopted. tools/jobprofile.js: the profiles and archetypes (build/jobprofiles.json, build/archetypes.json), a post step through tools/exam.js's hook (T-685) for the dial, and the checks. Snapshot 8dcd24032d (inputs hash dcd477d8a78c, after T-715's leader fixes), Track A (step 34b, wCarry 0). No change to ledger.js, exam.js or the ledger data. List co-occurrence from grimstat-corpus (https://github.com/N041M/grimstat-corpus, CC BY 4.0), the lists their players and organisers published on MiniHeadQuarters; counts only, 11th-edition lists from 20 June 2026.

In plain English

What we built. Every one of the 733 units in our 16 armies now has a job profile: 20 numbers, one per job from design/jobs.md (Burst, the four kinds of target, durability, hard to target, OC, holding, cheap activations, action-doing, forward deployment, reserves, melee delivery, threat range, transport, leading a squad, the army-rule engine, Battle-shock, command points). Each is per point where it's an amount, and each is measured against the unit's own army, so 0 means "the army's typical unit" and +1 means one army spread better. A unit is "good at" a job when it is at least half a spread above its army's typical unit; the average unit is good at five of the twenty.

The archetypes. Asking the numbers for the pure types that every unit is a mix of, seven come out (the elbow of the fit, 63% of the spread explained; four explain 50%, ten 69%). In plain words:

  1. Cheap support piece: cheap, leads or helps a squad, free to do actions, often arrives from reserve (Mucolid Spores, Apothecary Biologis, Tallyman, Sanguinary Priest, Kharseth).
  2. Infiltrating skirmisher: hard to target, deploys forward or arrives anywhere, hunts characters (Boss Snikrot, the Deathleaper, the Lictor, the Callidus Assassin, Eliminators, Sekhetar Robots).
  3. Transport: carries a squad cheaply, reaches far, a cheap body (every Rhino, the Raider).
  4. Line troops: OC per point that stays on the objective, clears chaff (Assault Intercessors, Hormagaunts, Cadian Shock Troops, Plaguebearers, Beast Snagga Boyz, Tzaangors).
  5. Long-range heavy: long threat range, anti-tank, tough (the Voidraven, Defilers, the Baal Predator, the Hive Crone, the Hekaton, the Forgefiend).
  6. Squad leader and character hunter: what its squad becomes with it, plus Precision and cheapness (Master of Executions, the Judiciar, Lelith, the Tyranid Prime, the Bigboss).
  7. Deep-striking hammer: arrives from reserve and lands its charge on tanks and elites (Lion El'Jonson, Grey Knight Terminators, the Trygon, Assault Terminators, the Hive Tyrant, Magnus, the Maulerfiend and the Mutalith).

These are the role labels the card asked for, found without hand labels; each unit is a mix (the Leapers are 0.65 skirmisher and 0.35 line troops; the Tyranid Warriors are line troops with some hammer).

Rivals by dominance. A unit is dominated when another unit of its army is at least as good on every job it is good at, and better on one. By that strict rule 198 of 733 units are dominated (67 strongly), mostly where a unit is good at only one or two things: spore and artillery pieces that only reach far, characters whose only distinction is being cheap, and Rhino-like hulls. It finds none of Jordan's 13 pairs. The reason is clear in the table below: in every case the unit he says loses its slot is a little better than its rival on at least one of its good jobs (the Winged Hive Tyrant lands its charge 0.8 against the Hive Tyrant's 0.7; the Maulerfiend kills far more per point than the Mutalith). With half a spread of tolerance and only the top two or three good jobs counting, it finds 4 or 5 of the 13 (chance would find under one), but the rules were loosened after seeing this, so that count is in sample.

The archetypes find Jordan's rivals better than dominance does. 9 of his 13 pairs share their largest archetype (chance 2.3): both Hive Tyrants, both kinds of Warriors, the Leapers and the Lictor, the Carnifexes, the Toxicrene and the Haruspex, the Iron-master and the Kâhl, the Maulerfiend and the Mutalith, Spawn and Tzaangors, both kinds of Enlightened. The rival is in the same role but not better per point on our measures: whatever makes the reviewers prefer the Mutalith, the Kâhl or the Hive Tyrant is not yet in the 20 jobs (rituals and bonuses a unit can receive, T-717; what a character lends, T-715).

Players' lists agree a little. Pairs where one unit dominates the other (both taken in at least a fifth of their army's lists) share a list a little less often than the army's other popular pairs: mean lift −0.13 against −0.05 (random same-army pairs as many per army sit at or below that 6% of the time; the looser rules 2% and under 1%). Together they appear 210 times where independence expects 221: substitutes, weakly.

The dial. Cutting a dominated unit's Value (domRival) doesn't hold out: held out by army it costs 1.3 points (±1.1) at the strict rule, and the mean-shortfall and looser variants sit between −0.3 and 0.0, level with their placebos. Track A already ranks the dominator above the dominated in 62% of the strict pairs (reviewers do in 56%), so there is little left for the dial to fix. Thousand Sons gain (+2.6 at 0.5, placebo 0.0; Heldrake 11th → 24th); Votann lose (−2.9, the Arkanyst Evaluator 7th → 17th is a reviewers' B). Nothing adopted.

What next. Use the archetypes, not dominance, to find rivals (same main archetype, as T-682 tried with its likeness, but with roles measured from jobs), and look for the missing jobs in what the rival does that the measured jobs miss (T-717's bonuses, rituals, what a character lends).
