Discovery only: a report, nothing adopted, no ledger or exam file touched. Made by node tools/reasons.js --md --out reports/tiers/2026-10-05-reasons; the per-unit tags are in 2026-10-05-reasons.json for the pooled readable model (T-704) to use as variables later.
In plain English
- We tagged what the repo holds, and for the Tyranids that is almost no reasons. The three Tyranid transcripts were read for grades, not for reasons: of their 156 graded units, 67 carry a note and only 22 of those give anything we can tag; the rest say where a unit sat (top of the grade, graded with the Broodlord, read from the final board). One Tyranid note gives a role reason (the Screamer-killer, for Battle-shock lists); none mentions damage into tanks, screens, scoring, durability or delivery. What we can read off is the context of a grade: which units were graded with a leader, which only in one detachment, which were held down by a sibling or by points, and the reviewers' own tier names (HivemindHobbies' "Detachment dependent" and "Spicy pick", Into the Hive Mind's "Specific use case").
- Role reasons exist in only three files: Tista Minis' Space Marine article (30 units), Auspex's Leagues of Votann (18) and the retired Sprues & Brews Ork codex review (45, not a tier list): 81 of the 88 units with a role tag come from them. Across all 24 11th-edition panels with notes, 290 of 928 graded units carry any tag and 138 a positive or held-back reason; the rest are blank or carry only a context tag.
- What the tags say about letters (stated tags only, 22 panels, 883 units, mean letter 3.07 where S is 5 and D 1):
- A character that makes its squad (leader-unlock) is the clearest positive: 21 units, mean 4.10 (+1.0 letter), none below B.
- A sibling does the job better is the clearest negative: 11 units, 8 of them at C, mean −0.6.
- Costs too much (21, −0.26), pending points or untested (17, −0.31), slow or awkward to deliver (6, −0.57) hold units back; the first copy is a sure pick (6, +0.93) lifts them.
- Only good in one detachment is the most common note (48 stated) and sits at the average letter (−0.01): reviewers grade such a unit for its detachment rather than marking it down for needing one.
- Graded with its leader (needs-support, 22) sits slightly above average (+0.11): the squad is graded as the pair.
- The role tags (damage into tanks or hordes, durable, scorer, actions, arrival, screens) are all above average but on 2 to 11 units each: too few to rank.
- Consensus among the three Tyranid reviewers: only one tag is given by all three to the same unit (the Broodlord makes its Genestealers). Two of three agree on: Carnifexes good only with Old One Eye leading one; Genestealers and Hormagaunts graded with their leaders; Old One Eye as the leader that makes a Carnifex; the Psychophage and the Winged Prime as detachment pieces; Barbgaunts, Ripper Swarms, Toxicrene and Trygon as niche (from tier names).
- The gap list: the reasons reviewers give that the ledger has no dial for at all are situational (niche, counter pick, list or matchup dependent; 58 records, 21 stated), copies (the first one is a sure pick, more are worth less, or best in pairs; 6), unreliable dice (1) and indirect fire (1). The large ones the ledger has but does not use in Track A are leader-unlock (32: leadersLeading, charHome, leaderCredit all at 0), needs-support (26: attachChars in Track B only), sibling-better (12: rivalW built, not kept), transport (14: carry sliders at 0), damage by target class (19: killClassWeight at 0, preferredTargets Track B), mobile (15: neutral) and screens (2: at 0). The most common reason of all, detachment-dependent (69), is one the ledger answers the other way: it ranks every unit at its best detachment, as the reviewers mostly do.
- Jordan's six: the reviewers' notes give a reason for only one of them. Carnifexes: all three C, two of three say they are worth taking only as one Carnifex led by Old One Eye. For the other five the notes are blank or a tier name, but the letters line up with Jordan's rivals: the Hive Tyrant is above the Winged Hive Tyrant in all three lists, the melee Warriors above the ranged ones in all three (all three give the ranged Warriors C, so if it is a miss it is all three reviewers' miss), the Haruspex above both the Carnifexes and the Toxicrene in all three, and the Lictor at or above the Leapers in all three (the Leapers spread S, A, B; Into the Hive Mind had not played them). Nothing on file mentions the Gargoyles jailing or stealing objectives; all three give them B.
- What would answer T-705 fully: reasons written into the panels in our own words, unit by unit, from the transcripts (for the Tyranids first). That needs someone with the transcripts (Jordan, or a session he hands them to); this tool re-reads any
whynotes added later and the tags follow, with no code change for the words it already knows.
How it was done
- Read: every 11th-edition panel (tools/edition.js) whose units carry any text: our
whyparaphrases, the older panels' own one-wordtags(Tista Minis, Orks), and the source tables (reports/tiers/sources/2026-10-03-tier*.csv) joined to each panel by itslist_id: the reviewer's tier name and the transcriber's unit note, used only to pick tags. No transcript or video was opened or fetched; no source text is copied into the report or the JSON (only tags, ourwhy, and which kind of note a tag came from). - Skipped: the 10th-edition panels, and the four 3 Oct summary files and Auspex's Astra Militarum, which carry no notes. The retired Ork panel is tagged (its reasons are the richest we have) but kept out of the pooled tables, as it is a codex review rather than a ranking.
- Tagging: fixed word rules per tag (tools/reasons.js
RULES), checked by hand against every tagged unit and corrected where they misread (a weapon in a unit's name is not a reason; "carries them" means Old One Eye makes the Carnifexes, not a transport). A pairing note ("graded as a pair with …") gives leader-unlock to the character and needs-support to the squad, by the CHARACTER keyword in docs/data/index.json. - Confidence: stated when a note says it; inferred when it comes from the reviewer's tier name, a pairing with a character, or the letter of a sibling the note names. The second pooled table counts stated tags only, since a reviewer's "Detachment dependent" or "Spicy pick" tier was mapped to one letter and its tag would follow that letter by construction.
- Polarity: positive (a reason it is good), negative (a reason it is held back) and context (a condition on the grade, which can go either way).

Jordan's six, read
| Unit | Letters (Hivemind · Into the Hive Mind · Auspex) | Jordan's rival | Rival higher in | What the notes say |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gargoyles | B · B · B | none (his note: they jail and steal objectives) | – | nothing; tier names only (detachment dependent; specific use case) |
| Winged Hive Tyrant | B · B · A | Hive Tyrant (A · S · S) | 3 of 3 | nothing; tier names only |
| Ranged Warriors | C · C · C | melee Warriors (B · B · B) | 3 of 3 | graded apart from the melee ones, nearly a step higher (Auspex); top of its grade (Into the Hive Mind) |
| Von Ryan's Leapers | B · A · S | Lictor (A · S · S) | 2 of 3, level in the third | not yet played (Into the Hive Mind) |
| Carnifexes | C · C · C | Haruspex (B · A · B) | 3 of 3 | only one, led by Old One Eye (two of three) |
| Toxicrene | C · B · C | Haruspex (B · A · B) | 3 of 3 | moved up a step while grading (Into the Hive Mind); tier names only |
The letters agree with Jordan's "the better option takes the slot" reading for five of the six, but no reviewer's note on file says so; it is our reading of their letters, not their stated reason. T-682's rivals dial, which models exactly this, was measured and not kept (held out −0.73 ± 0.73): the reviewers' letters already put these units low, so a rival penalty mostly pushes down units that are already down.
